Il Vinco is a joint project between three friends — Daniele Manoni, Marco Fucini, and Nicola Brenciaglia — founded in 2014 on the southern slopes of Lago di Bolsena in Montefiascone, Lazio. The mission from the start was to recover and restore the native Canaiolo Nero vines indigenous to the area, a grape most commonly known as a blending component in Chianti but rarely given the chance to stand on its own. Here, planted on volcanic soils and bottled as a mono-varietal, it does exactly that.
The farm spans five hectares between 250 and 450 metres elevation, with gentle lake breezes and good sun exposure keeping the site in balance. Farming is organic, and since 2017 the approach has become fully biodynamic: spontaneous fermentation, no temperature control, no clarification or filtration. They got their start with the help of Andrea Occhipinti, another Lazio native, who offered use of his cellar in the early years. The name Il Vinco refers to the willow branch traditionally used to tie vines to stakes in the vineyard.
