The Gift of Rheinhessen
DB Schmitt Pétillant Weiss ‘19
A classic from Daniel and Bianka Schmitt - pineapple express, earthy and herbaceous nose, apple chips, butterscotch, peach and yeast cake. Appears firm in the mouth, but is a real flatterer. Summer in a glass! 6 weeks extended fermentation on the skins. Bottled unfiltered, with zero added sulfur.
Marto Crazy Crazy '20
A field blend of Huxelrebe, Wuerzer & Muller Thurgau. the Huxelrebe is picked early and left in contact with the skins for 14 days and then a further 3 weeks on the heavy lees following fermentation with indegenous yeasts. Secondary fermentation then takes place in the bottle when the juice of the Wuerzer and Muller Thurgau is added, there's no fining, filtration or addition of sulphur and the wine has a fairly large amount of sediment but don't be put off! It's an explosion (quite literally be ready with your glass upon opening!) of fruit, packed with fresh citrus, ripe quince and crunchy cider apples, there's a grippy texture and zingy acidity.
Vin de Lagamba Frauen Power ’20
'German Lambrusco' - surely the first of its kind?! The soda bottle appearance certainly sets the right tone; this is brisk, refreshing, lightly sparkling and clocking in below 10 degrees of alcohol. Dornfelder and Sylvaner, allowed to complete fermentation in the bottle to create a light effervescence. Whilst not as deep and tannic as Lambrusco, it's a fun reference, and this playful wine is just that.
